Content Provided By: Spook Spann & Brian Stephens, StickemArchery.com Pro Staff

Spook here to talk about some of my top rated hunting gear I used in 2011. While Spring Turkey season is just around the corner I often get asked about the gear I use in the field. I would like to talk about some of the gear I believe helped me be successful this past season. One thing I have been very fortunate to have are sponsors whom I truly believe in their products. So, the products I am sharing with you have been tested and I do believe in them..

There are two key tools you have to have to no matter what the situation or where I am hunting. A quality bow and quality clothing. These hunting tools are critical because without a bow I am confident in I cannot make those necessary shots. Without clothing that keeps me cool when it is hot or warm when it’s cold I cannot hunt as long. For me my PSE Omen Compound Bow is my bow of choice. It is a super fast and very accurate bow. This bow has short brace height and does require practice to be confident in but I love it. In fact I am so confident in it I shoot a 190-inch Mule Deer this past September at 103 yards. I did not hesitate to take the shot knowing what this bow could do. Keep in mind I practice these types of shots throughout the year so I know where and how this bow will shoot.

Next is my Underarmour performance clothing. In my opinion there is nothing that matches its ability to keep me cool during the early season hunts out west for Mule Deer and Elk. I used the new speed freak boots this year and the UA H.A.W rubber boots. I loved them both. They were lightweight, comfortable and durable. As the season progressed I would use Underarmour base layers to keep me cool or warm depending on the conditions. One of my favorite jackets and pants were the ridge reaper series in the Mossy Oak Infinity pattern. Whether it is Mossy Oak Infinity, Treestand, or Obsession I am totally concealed. The key to Underarmour performance clothing is your ability to layer and have each aspect of clothing performs based on the conditions. This helps me hunt longer and harder because I am not dealing with the conditions as much.

Other key bowhunting supplies I used were the Swhacker Broadhead with new 2 inch cutting diameter, Nufletch Archery fletching system on my PSE carbon force arrows. Additionally, I use the Illumanight tracking system that is a revolutionary product. Once you shoot the animal the material in the cartridge will mix with the blood creating a highway to track from. I like the Swhacker because flies like a field point and wounds are awesome. The Nufletch Archery Fletching System is unlike anything I have seen. Arrows fly better and has better penetration vs. my other arrows. I practice during the year on Big Green Targets. These targets are made in USA (important to me) and made from 100% recycled material. The Big Green Targets have great stopping ability, easy arrow removal and can withstand a ton of shots.

Last but not least is my ability to manage my scent. I do this several ways by using Lethal Scent Elimination Field Spray, Shampoo, and Detergent. The science behind Lethal products is better than most in the industry. The parent company of Lethal is a scent and odor eliminating company. They do it better than anyone. Finally, I will hunt out of Redneck Hunting Blind. While I do hunt out of a treestand I do love to muzzle loader and even bowhunt out of Redneck Blind because of their ability to control your scent due to the construction of the blind. There is a ton of room for myself and cameraman with a variety of shooting windows and windows to view 360 degree.

I will be using these products and others next year and hope you find this recap of my 2011 season helpful. Having the best gear is vital to helping me be a successful hunter and produce my TV show and take care of my family. What is the end result we are all working towards? For me it is enjoying the outdoors and doing my best to harvest Monster animals. This year I was fortunate to be able to harvest a Monster Mule Deer that nearly scored over 2oo inches and this Monster 171 inch Whitetail in Missouri. So, you can imagine I want to use the best to help me accomplish this! I love to try new archery hunting equipment and and new Bowhunting Supplies to help me get the job done. When all else fails my Under Armour Gear is always there to help me stay in the woods longer and hunt harder. The last thing I want to worry about is being comfortable in the woods. I am an active hunter and need clothing and boots that can keep up with the way I hunt. UA gear is unlike anything I have ever used and that is why I used it for every scenario I am going to be in. Good Luck and God Bless!

Check out this new broadhead from NAP. It looks bad to the bone! Speaking of bone the new edges take cutting to a new level. This has been a tried and true broadhead for bowhunters for many years. NAP has taken this new Thunderhead Edge to a whole new level. We have used this broadhead on many occasions in the past two hunting seasons. For a fixed blade broadhead it flies better than any other fixed blade broadhead I have practiced with or bowhunted with. In fact last year I shot a great Eastern Turkey with it on Spook Spann’s farm. It was an awesome turkey hunt that ended with a dead long beard via at Thunderhead edge. So, if you are looking for a sharp, consistent shooting fixed blade broadhead. I do not think you will go wrong with this one.

Patented Trophy Tip®
Patented Trophy Tip® point is specifically designed for maximum bone splitting power and unbelieveable durability.

Micro-grooved Pro ferrules greatly increases flight accuracy and penetration power.

Devastating Blade Design
Straight edges slice hide, flesh and arteries. Serrations saw through bone like a hot knife through butter!

THUNDERHEAD EDGE has all of the features that have made Thunderhead the standard in fixed blade broadheads and more! Exclusive straight/serrated blade technology is devastating on hide & flesh and saws through bone like a hot knife through butter. Offset blades produce gaping exit holes and massive blood trails. Proven design and precision manufacturing deliver tack-driving accuracy. Fully assembled ready to shoot.

Tips

Should I align my broadheads up with my vanes?
A lot of people still do this, but it is an unnecessary step with today’s modern equipment. A Thunderhead will fly just as well by just screwing them onto the insert tightly, no matter where the blades wind up compared to the vanes.

Do the Microgrooves really work?
Yes! NAP’s patented microgroove ferrules channel the air over the ferrule for better flight. More importantly, they slide thru and penetrate bone much better that standard ferrules. This really does help get better penetration.

Thunderheads and spin testing
It’s important to get any broadhead you have to spin true. The easiest way to do this with the Thunderhead is to screw the fully assembled head onto the arrow shaft, and tighten using the supplied wrench. Now untighten the head just a little and wait a few seconds. This will let the o-ring on the back of the ferrule regain its shape and help the head spin true. Now slowly retighten the head and you should be good to go!

Resharpened blades VS new ones.
It’s always best to use new blades when possible. No resharpen techniques will get Thunderhead blades as sharp as new ones. The Thunderhead blade is ground, honed, stropped and polished with three different grind angles which produce the sharpest blades in the industry.

NEWTOWN, Conn.-The National Shooting Sports Foundation, trade association for the firearms and ammunition industry, calls the 3.6 percent rise in paid hunting license holders for 2009 one of the most encouraging signs for hunting in recent years.

“This is great news for our industry and everyone associated with hunting,” said Steve Sanetti, president and CEO of the National Shooting Sports Foundation. “Many efforts are at work to build hunting participation, and they are paying off. More people are enjoying the outdoors and sharing the tradition of hunting with family and friends. Also, more hunting license sales translate into more funds for wildlife conservation.”

U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service last week reported a total of 14,974,534 paid license holders for 2009, the largest figure since 2002 and an increase of 526,494 over 2008. The 3.6 percent rise in paid license holders represents the largest year-over-year increase since 1974. (A “paid license holder” is one individual regardless of the number of licenses purchased.)

NSSF cites several reasons for the increase, ranging from programs launched by many state wildlife agencies over the last decade to increas

e hunting participation to a difficult economy that motivated hunters to fill their freezers with game rather than store-bought meat. Also, hunters who were among the unemployed or had their work hours reduced used some of their free time to go hunting.

Coordinated efforts of state wildlife agencies, conservation organizations and the firearms industry appear to have halted a decades-long decline in hunting license sales, which since 2005 have held at the 14.5-million level until the jump in 2009. NSSF has played a key role promoting hunting participation with its programs and websites. Through its Hunting Heritage Partnership program, NSSF has provided state agencies with $3.8 million to fund initiatives designed to encourage hunting among all age groups. Also, through Families Afield, a partnership effort of NSSF, the U.S. Sportsmen’s Alliance and National Wild Turkey Federation started in 2004, thirty states have made it easier for youth to begin hunting at a younger age with licensed adults. NSSF websites such as www.WingshootingUSA.org make it easy for hunters to locate gamebird preserves, where youth can easily get started in hunting and where inactive adult hunters can revive their interest.

Another positive sign for hunting is that contrary to claims of a wholesale decline in hunting participation, paid license holders have increased in 24 states in the five-year period from 2005 to 2009.

“Due to continued urbanization and changes in our culture, hunting will face significant challenges for the foreseeable future, but at the same time hunting remains an extremely important activity in the lives of millions of Americans, as the latest hunting licenses sales figures confirm,” said Sanetti.

NSSF points out that the actual number of hunters who go afield in any given year is greater than the total of paid hunting license holders in that year. U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service figures do not account for certain state exemptions for purchasing a hunting license. Many states allow landowners and active military to hunt without purchasing a license; also, lifetime license holders and youth hunters who do not fall within the required license purchasing age are not included in the figures.

According to an NSSF-funded study carried out by Southwick Associates, the pool of hunters in America is much larger than previously thought. The study, released last fall, estimated that 21.8 million people purchased a hunting license at least once in the last five years.

Hunters are the backbone of conservation funding in America, contributing more than $1 billion each year through the purchase of licenses, tags, permits and stamps and through excise taxes paid on firearms and ammunition. For example, proceeds from the sale of Federal Duck Stamps, a required purchase for migratory waterfowl hunting, have purchased more than 5 million acres of habitat for the National Wildlife Refuge System.

NSSF, using its new 12-state hunting license sales index, anticipated the national increase in paid hunting license holders by reporting a 3.5 percent increase in license sales last spring. “It’s gratifying to see how accurate our state index was, which gives us confidence in future index-based hunting license sales figures,” said Jim Curcuruto, NSSF’s director of industry research and analysis.

NSSF will announce its state index hunting license sales report for 2010 this spring.

Baltimore, MD (Date) – Under Armour, Inc., a leader in athletic performance apparel, footwear and accessories, debuts a new game-changing technology for the 2012 whitetail hunting collection, Under Armour® Scent Control. This exclusive technology revolutionizes the way hunters remain undetected in the field with an innovative Zeolite-based scent control system with silver anti-microbial that lasts ten times longer than the commonly used carbon-based technologies.

Under Armour has partnered with industry leaders to utilize an exclusive dual technology. Under Armour Scent Control uses a specifically engineered formula that effectively traps human vapor odor using synthetic zeolites and suppresses odor causing bacterial growth by employing a silver antimicrobial system. The anti-microbial is encased in the custom-engineered zeolite carrier, a synthetic lava far superior to carbon, to create the ultimate odor control material. Under Armour Scent Control not only captures more odor than traditional odor absorbers, but it also lasts longer, maintaining 99% effectiveness after 50 washes.

Under Armour Scent Control technology is integrated into the whitetail hunting apparel collection from baselayer to outerwear, but what about your gear? Also new for 2012, Under Armour delivers a total scent control program with the introduction of Under Armour Scent Control Spray. This spray formula contains the same game-changing zeolite technology, designed for use on all the necessary gear associated with the hunt. Use Under Armour Scent Control Spray on items like your bow, tree stand, backpack, and footwear to remain undetected and lethal in the field.

Rage Broadheads have been taking the bowhunting world by storm over the past five years with their slim cam technology. They have become a real player in the industry through a great deal of marketing and use by bowhunters across the country. Rage Outdoors introduced the most lethal broadhead to ever hit the market: The Rage X-Treme. With a 2.3-inch cutting diameter, the sweeping blade angle on the new X-Treme maintains kinetic energy longer and penetrates deeper than any other blade, and produces larger entry and exit wounds for even better blood trails. This new broadhead is uniquely designed with a single-bevel blade that improves bone- and tissue-cutting performance on even the toughest of prey.

For dependable blade containment and deployment at all times, the Rage X-Treme has been designed with with the newly patented Shock Collar. This new design will ensure thatyour blades will remain in place until that ultimate moment of truth.

The new Rage X-Treme broadheads are easily recognizable by their yellow ferrule design, and they were designed for use with bow draw weights in excess of 60 pounds. They will be available at retailers nationwide this spring, and the MSRP for the RageX-Treme 3-pack will be $49.99.

Rage Outdoors is headquartered in Superior, Wis. For more information on the full line of revolutionary SlipCam Rage Broadheads and the Ghost Quiver, contact Rage Outdoors, 1230 Poplar Avenue, Superior, WI 54880; call (715) 392-2860; or visit www.ragebroadheads.com. You will be able to purchase these and other Rage Broadheads and Archery Broadheads at www.StickemArchery.com

Even though most of the country is still in the grip of scorching temperatures, hunters already are thinking about early season hunting opportunities. Taking a hunter safety course at hunter-ed.com or bowhunter-ed.com is a great way to prepare for bowhunting and early season dove, duck and goose hunting.

“Studying at hunter-ed.com and bowhunter-ed.com is free to the public and allows students to learn about hunter safety in the comfort of their home,” said Kurt Kalkomey, president of Kalkomey Enterprises, Inc. “These days it’s a challenge to find a free weekend or multiple week nights to take the classroom hunter safety course. The hunter-ed.com and bowhunter-ed.com online courses save time and money and open up hunting opportunities for young and novice hunters.”

Students can take the first step toward receiving their hunter or bowhunter certification by successfully completing the online course for hunter education or bowhunting. Those who must be certified before they can buy a hunting license pay a one-time fee, which is due only if they pass the test. Students can take the test as many times as they need to pass it. Online hunter safety and bowhunting education courses are available in participating states so students should visit hunter-ed.com or bowhunter-ed.com to take a course specific to their state.

After passing the exam at hunter-ed.com or bowhunter-ed.com, students should immediately print out a Field Day Qualifier Certificate, which admits them to a field day in their state (if applicable). Many states require students to pre-register for field days, so hunter education coordinators advise students to visit their state wildlife agency website to sign up. Field days typically include a skills trail, shooting exercises, ethics presentation, and a final hunter education exam.

The contents at hunter-ed.com are developed in conjunction with the state agency responsible for hunter education. Students who use hunter-ed.com will study the same content used in classroom courses.

Bowhunter-ed.com is the official online course of the National Bowhunter Education Foundation (NBEF) and is approved by all states requiring successful completion of a recognized bowhunter education course.

Lamar, MO- Redneck Blinds, the premium manufacturer of 100% fiberglass blinds, introduces The Trophy Tower Crossover Blind, a 5X5 blind that is designed to be suitable for gun, crossbow and even compound bow hunters, hence the name “Crossover.”

The Trophy Tower Crossover features 14″ tall x 36″ wide real tinted tempered automotive glass windows that not only maximize visibility, but also give the gun and crossbow hunter maximum room and maneuverability to get the perfect angle for any shot. The windows feature the industries tightest design using deluxe automotive window gaskets to keep the blinds dry and bug free.

The blind features wraparound shelving on 3 sides and 4 upper corner shelves to store all the accessories a hunter will need. Carpeted lower walls and floor provide for maximum comfort and sound control.

The blind is perfect for one hunter, but also roomy enough to accommodate two hunters. All windows are tinted tempered automotive glass, which helps camouflage movement inside the blind.

Every Redneck Blind is made with 100% fiberglass to ensure a durable and sound tight product. The fiberglass-molded exterior is composed of a UV protected gel coat that won’t peel or fade making the blinds virtually maintenance free. The tempered automotive glass windows feature whisper quiet hinges giving the hunter the best advantage when taking that trophy shot. In addition these blinds offer a one-piece roof to ensure a weather tight finish, along with a high density, marine carpeted fiberglass floor that will not rot and prevents varmint damage.
