“Age this Buck” – August Edition

How old you think this Buck is?¬† The goal is to help you better learn some of the body characteristics of deer so you can let younger bucks walk or grow older if you are working on a QDM effort on your property.¬† Remember Kip Adams, Biologist from Quality Deer Management Association, will be providing his expertise at the end of the month based on what he sees from these pictures…….

This deer is from Alabama

Time of Year is November

Here’s my analysis for this month’s buck.
This Alabama buck is a horse.¬† His legs appear short for his body, his neck is wide, and his shoulders are heavily muscled.¬† These characteristics, combined with his full stomach and heavy hindquarters show he’s fully mature.¬† His pot belly and sway back suggest he’s at least 6.5 years old.¬† The abnormal growth of his left antler can be age or injury related.¬† If it’s age related, he’s likely 7.5 or 8.5 years old.¬† His antlers may not score a lot, but the real trophy in this buck is¬†his jawbone as it’s quite a feat to outsmart a buck with his tenure.
