I do not think any hunter would argue with the topic around the value of game cameras at locating and scouting big game animals.  Digital Game Cameras may be one of the most important tools you have access to help you become more successful in the woods.  Scouting and Trail Cameras have many roles from locating specific animals, taking inventory of animals, and learning more about their travel/feeding patterns.  Now that we all agree with the value of digital scouting cameras let’s talk about what cameras to choose from.  There are soo many on the market now and the technologies have really improved among the cameras.  With that said I do believe there are a lot of “me to” or similar cameras with just another name on them.  The below list of Primos, Spy Point, Moultrie, Cuddeback and Stealthcam game cameras is not all inclusive to what is available on the market.  This is just part 1 of our 2012 game camera reviews.  Here are a few things to consider when determining what camera or cameras to buy….

  • Value or Cost of the camera – becareful you may get what  you pay for
  • Image Quality – How many mega pixels do you want or do you need?  The higher the mp the higher the price tag will be…
  • Video Capability – Do you want video capabilities along with still images, Do you want HD video?
  • Types of Batteries – Do you want AA, D cell, C cell batteries?
  • Ease of Use – Is it easy to set up, view pictures, download pictures, set up features?
  • Trigger Speed – Consider this if you are placing over bait or travel zone
  • Wireless Capability- A great feature if you want up to the minute pictures without going to camera site
  • Remote Capability- Great feature if want to minimize scent or pressure
  • LCD on camera- Instant viewing of pictures on the camera

STEALTHCAM UNIT OPS

Another new release in 2012 for Stealth Cam is the Unit OPS camera. The Unit OPS is similar to the Sniper Shadow in that it uses “No Glo Night Vision” technology to capture night time photos without your trophy ever knowing the Unit OPS camera is taking his picture. The IR range is exceptional at 50 ft. The camera features BurstMode which shoots 1-9 images per trigger and has a 2x and 4x digital zoom. TRIAD Technology makes the Unit OPS an extremely versatile tool in that it captures video, 8MP still images and even offers a time-lapse video (allowing hunters to review a day’s worth of activity in a matter of minutes). The unit is powered by 8 “AA” batteries and comes black in color. I do like the No Glo Night Vision aspect of this camera for specific situations and if your deer do get pressure.  This will help to minimize any extra disturbance to the deer if they are coming to feeder or food source.

  • 8.0 megapixel.
  • 3 resolution settings 8mp/3mp/1.3mp.
  • Video recording 10-180 seconds w/audio.
  • Time lapse function.
  • 36 “No Glo Night Vision” emitters/50ft. range w/IR ? control 38/30.
  • Burst mode 1-9 images per triggering.
  • 0-59 second / 0-59 minute recovery time out.
  • External LCD status display.
  • 2X / 4X digital zoom.
  • SD card slot up to 16GB.
  • Test mode.

  • Video output.

STEALTHCAM SNIPER

The second camera in the Sniper series is the Sniper Shadow. Two things set this camera apart from other cameras in the stealth lineup. For starters, the Sniper Shadow comes with “No Glo Night Vision” technology wary game animals will be clueless as to the cameras presence. And with a 50 ft range, you’re sure to capture that elusive buck as he passes by. The second feature of the Sniper Shadow is its ability to perform 3 different functions. Using what Stealth Cam calls TRIAD Technology (3 functions in 1), this camera can take video recordings, 8mp still images, and even offers time-lapsed video(allowing hunters to review a day’s worth of activity in a matter of minutes).

  • 720HP High Definition Digital video w/audio.
  • DRONE Compatible.
  • 3 still image settings: 8mp, 3mp, 1.3mp.
  • 5-300 second adjustable video clips.

SPY POINT TINY-W2

With a list of possibilities, the new Tiny-W2 is sure to make would-be thieves think twice about taking what isn’t theirs. Thanks to a Blackbox Receiver, which can be placed up to 250ft away from the main camera, each picture that is captured by the main unit is automatically sent to the minuscule backup box hidden discretely some distance away. In the event that your camera is stolen, you will still have access to the images; allowing you to still see the deer activity at your site, but more importantly, the last person who stood in front of your camera. Additional highlights include 8MP images,3 sensors for a total of 7 zone detection range, compact design, 38 infrared LED’s for night time illumination, adjustable periods of operation, time-lapse mode, instant trigger time, date/time/moon/temp stamp, and video recording.  This camera is one of those that is a game changer for me.  The fact that you can set up your camera and not have to go to it to see what pictures you have is outstanding.  Especially, if you are hunting a giant mature deer.  The reality is we get excited and want to continually go check pictures and then leave our scent.  This camera minimizes your “presence” in that area to limit the pressure on that animal you are hunting.  I can not wait to use this set up this upcoming season.

  • 8.0 Mega pixel picture quality.
  • High, medium or low wireless photo transmission.
  • 250 ft wireless range to the receiver (5x improved).

CUDDEBACK ATTACK IR

Attack IR takes 5 MP images both day and night. The IR images are stunningly clear. And, Attack IR uses 36 high-power IR LEDs for a true 50-foot flash range. The Rapid Pulse Illumination Technology™ minimizes IR LED glow by pulsing LEDs for just 1/4 second. Cuddeback’s exclusive Correctly Exposed IR Technology assures IR images are correctly exposed regardless to how far the deer are from the camera.  I have used this Cuddeback Attack IR Camera on our Georgia Farm.  Overall, I am pleased with it’s performance.  There is no question the trigger speed is fast and the Video is high quality.  What I did not like is the mounting system.  If the bracket brakes on the back that secures to the tree it is difficult to mount.  The price is a little steep but overall a quality camera.New features for 2012• Camera delays of 5 seconds – 30 minutes
